#7 Administration of Grace

It’s time for this blog series to bow gracefully and leave the stage. There will likely be several curtain calls down the road, but this particular performance is over. And what a gracious audience! I am blessed beyond compare. So how can we sum up all we’ve talked about?  Well…

You can get caught up in discussing the origins of homosexuality.

You can get caught up in discussing whether or not sexual orientation can be changed.

You can get caught up in discussing gay marriage.

You can get caught up in many worthy conversations in a way that keeps you from being caught up in Jesus Christ.

For Christians, all of these conversations are unproductive if you are not seeking to have the character of Jesus Christ formed within you and the Holy Spirit leading you in a way that is pleasing to your Father God. Being right doesn’t get you anywhere if it looks like this:

 - Fred Phelps (of the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka , KS ) is infamous for cultivating inexcusable hatred toward gay people. If you are attracted to the same gender - no discussion, no debate. Hell-bound. Your fate is sealed (and that would include us as well, for even having these conversations!). He has been a driving force behind protests at funerals and carrying signs that say, “God hates fags.” Officially listed as a hate group, he and his followers may be farther out there than most, but he’s had plenty of help from a few prominent celebrity evangelists.

 - After the September 11, 2001 attacks Jerry Falwell said on the 700 Club, "I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this happen” to which Pat Robertson concurred.

 - Robertson has described feminism as a "socialist, anti-family political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians.”

 - In mid-September 2004, Jimmy Swaggart, in a politically charged sermon, joked that he would kill a gay man. “I’m trying to find the correct name for it… this utter absolute asinine, idiotic stupidity of men marrying men. …I’ve never seen a man in my life I wanted to marry. And I’m gonna be blunt and plain; if one ever looks at me like that, I’m gonna kill him and tell God he died.”

Although the God-followers I know and associate with would never ever spew such hatred and insensitivity, nonetheless these are the pictures of Christianity that come to mind for many gay people.

At the very least, I hope I’ve convinced many of you to use redemptive language toward homosexuality (as a sin among sins rather than a sin above sins) for the sake of those who feel SSA and do not act on it because they believe it to be sin. We desperately need to rise above and be the body of Christ to each other so that we can be a witness to the world…

That witness is you. You have a unique way to reflect what God looks like to the world. It’s different than mine.

1 Peter 4:10-11

Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ.

To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever.

Amen .

That’s all she wrote!

I look forward to being back on board with blogging next week, but I’m going to take a bit of a blog hiatus for now. I’m planning a silent retreat day… a sort of debriefing with God since I’ve been all “caught up” in blogging!!! It’s always somethin’, ain’t it! :-)

At a later date, I’d like to share the things I’ve learned through these talks… the positive and negative. I’d love your reactions too, as I’m sure God will continue to bring things to the surface. But for now…

HAVE A WONDERFUL WEEKEND!

Hey Chris... I added your last-minute comment to the last post! Man, you worked too hard on that for it to get knocked out at the last minute! Thank you, friend!

Ang - thanks friend. For taking so much on to help so many.
Like you said - it's easy to sit in a room and talk with others who think like you about such topics... but you move all of us far out of that realm... inviting real discussion and real engagement with each other. If we are open and honest, we are affected and in some cases, dramatically changed by it.
Thank you...

Angie..I also want to thank you. This is something that I want to continue to chew on. These were hard and "stretching" conversations. I'm thankful that God put it on your heart to "go there" and that you had the guts to follow his lead. Have a great "silent retreat". That sounds so nice. I need me one of them!

Happy weekend. BTW...we are driving to Greenville, MS tonight to visit some of Todd's college friends. How far is that from you?

I think you have done an amazing job at creating an environment for comments and you blog comments have been beautifully done. We have been praying for you, and excited that we feel the spirit of God working through you. I have enjoyed hearing all the comments here. Your blog seems to be visited by some pretty amazing people. I pray God fills you with peace this weekend. The peace that only he can give.

MY GIRLS! HEATHER, FLEE AND AMY G! Hey... that sounds like a girls' rock band or somethin'!

HEATHER, you've been my angel today!
FLEE, you made this crazy ride enjoyable! And Greenville? I'm probably 2 1/2 hours from there, maybe a tad more. I'll be praying for safe travels for y'all!
AMY G, you and I both know there's so much more... but it was a good start, huh. I love you.

All I can say is that I enjoyed it, Angie. Thanks a lot. Enjoy your break from blogging (I think I could use one too!)

I've been away from blogging for quite awhile now and I'm just now coming back to see what you've been up to. I'm so glad to see that you are tackling this subject. It is near and dear to my heart as I have several loved ones with SSA. It's going to take me awhile to catch up with this series, but I wanted to let you know how much I appreciate you fostering an atmosphere of love and understanding in a difficult arena. Blessings to you, sister.

The series was a refreshing respite from the usual shouting match. Thank you everyone for sharing your thoughts, especially Angie for her thoughtful approach and excellent hosting.

JAY! I appreciate the endorsement over at your place, but most of all... I'm just thankful to know you, brother!

MARY? You're bloggin' again! Well, it'll take you awhile to catch up on this one. Wish we could've had you along for the ride. I'll let you know if/when we ever do this sort of thing again... Nice to see ya!

IRRATIONAL ENTITY! Awwwwwwww.... you are so very nice! I know much of this was elemental for you... so I appreciate your patience with all of us! You have so much to offer! Just wish we could've all met at my house and enjoyed our conversations face to face (with coffee, hot tea, whatever). You are welcome here anytime, new friend!

That great theologian, Garth Brooks once said, "You aren't wealthy until you have something money can't buy." My friendship with you Angie is counted among those precious things that money can't buy and make me a wealthy man.

I have taken a seat in the corner with a steaming cup of java for this discussion. I, along with others who have dropped in, are impressed with your love and openness, to accept and make feel welcomed all who come your way. That sweet lady is what made Jesus the winsome person He was, and you a reflection of that glory.

Thanks for challenging us to think.

Angie,
You've taught me much during this discussion--most vividly that controversial topics can be discussed among people with differing views with love, respect and validation. For some reason, I think this honors Jesus and I am grateful to have consumed several decaf lattes while being a part of this one.

Hope you have a great weekend! Will you be back soon?

LEE, I don't deserve you! But I sure 'preciate you sticking around through this series. It was tough one. So, your words are extra sweet to me (BTW, wasn't expecting Garth Brooks! Goodness gracious!).

And JB! I can't believe I didn't scare you away! I have not undertaken *anything* like this since I've been blogging! You jumped in the deep end with me!

Well, I'm packing an overnight bag & will leave after church Sunday & be gone all day Monday. I'll probably be back to visit the blog world on Wednesday. Until then...

You are all genuinely loved...

Angie,

I truly appreciate the grace with which you have handled this delicate topic. Someone in our class today at church brought up the prejudices we have toward homosexuals as something subtle that we don't even think about. I wanted to jump up and say, "Go read Angie!!"

Enjoy your retreat and be blessed.

Angie,

You are such a gracious and sweet sister in Christ. I am not only grateful that you have presented this series, I am grateful that YOU presented this series.

You have made me glad to be counted among your friends. More importantly, though, I believe you have made our Heavenly Father glad that you are His daughter.

God bless you, dear one,
-bill

I got a little behind and had to do some catching up today. Quite a read!

Thank you Angie for putting this all together. What a challenge! If someone had mentioned gay marriage out of the blue, I'd have just said no and never batted an eye. Now I really have something to think and pray about.

On another note... I read something recently about the form of churches in the future... house churches, traditional et all. But the one that I couldn't figure out was internet church. I couldn't see how it could work. I think I've seen it here. God is at work in his people, offering love and mercy to all. How wonderful is that!

This blog has a great deal of information on homosexuality.

The blog is both intellectual and spiritual!

The blogger Kathy is Catholic,I met her at a Courage event last year.

I've been following this series but haven't spoken up as of yet.

Though I disagree with your position on homosexuality (it is a position I held for quite some time), I do appreciate your attitude and graciousness. That's quite rare in the conservative Christian world.

Wow, AMY... I'm just happy someone brought up the insidious prejudices we fight. Thanks for thinking of me!

BILL, It just amazes me that you take the time to visit me here and give such encouragement. I'm glad to be your sister!

TIM, you made it through the whole series! Thanks, man. And yeah... blog church rocks!!! I think we're inching closer and closer to our Savior.

APPRENTICE, you are a keeper!

A new friend... BOB RAINEY! Thanks for dropping in. Sorry you caught the end of the series, but thanks for the link. I'll for sure check it out.

And RICHARD!!! I'm so glad you left a comment. It's nice to know you were with us during the series. Your words are bittersweet for me... Of course I'm thankful that you perceived the spirit that I intended... but so sad that it's rare. You're welcome back here anytime, new friend...
