Weight, Weight... Don't Tell Me!
I just went to my second follow-up appointment with the doctor who performed my lap-band surgery. I’m hesitant to share the numbers with you, because they mean different things to different people. My total loss so far, which would bring most folks to their goal weight, is only a start for me. But I suppose losing 42 lbs is something to be celebrated regardless! Bear in mind much of that is due to the pre-op and post-op liquid diet. The rest is due to the hard work that surrender requires.
As of now my band has not been tightened, so I do not feel any restriction when I eat… That may seem odd (because that’s what it’s there for, right?!) but my doctor is of the mindset that I should lose as much weight as I can by following their food restrictions and exercising before we begin to adjust the band. This trains me to do the work rather than relying on the band. It should be a *help* to me, not some magical implant that allows me to eat whatever I want and still lose weight. In case any of you are still searching for that program, let me save you some time – it doesn’t exist!
And as with most things, there are loopholes in this system. If people really have a heart to cheat, to indulge… they can employ their most clever efforts to make that happen. So much depends on the deepest dedication of the heart. And for the most part, I’m there… but I’ve had several weak moments that have led to slip ups. Nothing detrimental… I’m talking about eating too fast, eating more than I should, testing the waters in advancing on to a food that’s not allowed yet. And even though I can “get by” with those things, it’s a slippery slope & I fear what it might lead to. It’s such a challenge to be faithful in the small things.
Realistically, I have barely gotten out of the starting gate in this marathon, so it’s not quite time to be planning trips or anything… But I have an opportunity that I just can’t pass up! My friend Greg has been planning a trip to New York to see the first few days of play at the US Open with another friend of his - who bailed on him at the last minute. Fortunately I’m willing to step in! Anything for a friend! :-) It will still be a challenge for me, but it’s one I’m up for (one which wouldn’t have been a consideration pre-surgery). So, I’m thankful for Greg’s lame friend… because now I have the chance to see some awesome LIVE tennis and see New York City! Another highlight will be the chance to meet fellow (ex) blogger Little Light while I’m in Manhattan! How great is that!
BTW, we’ll have several days to explore the Big Apple before the tennis action begins. I’d love to hear any suggestions for how to spend some of that time from those of you who’ve already taken a bite out of the Apple. All input is welcome, so please share!

Congratulations and y'all be careful!
As for the Big Apple...My number one don't miss is Central Park.
Congrats on the loss! I think 42 pounds wonderful!!!
Broadway shows are a MUST!!! You can usually go same day & get some last minute seats pretty cheap, esp. if you don't mind an "obstructed view".
I also enjoyed Macy's toy store, which has a replica of Han Solo confined in Carbon. ;)
Empire State Building at night.
Staten Island Ferry is free with great view of Lady Liberty herself.
Don't eat anything that you can eat back home. We ate an Applebees on Broadway--go figure. (I hear Gray Papaya hot dogs are the best--I will definitely have one when I go back in November).
Bagels are to die for up there....and fold your pizza so the grease doesn't roll down your chin....
Don't buy $60 of M&Ms at the M&M store like we did.
Wear tennis shoes--not flip flops when in the city.
Don't get hit by a cab--and I would never ride in a buggy pedaled buy some guy...
HAVE A GREAT TIME!!
I love NYC...very close to my mission place.
I also recommend seeing... Lady Liberty by way of Staten Island Ferry ..and free is good..
THE MET for sure. Great museum!
I will never forget Isabelle and I almost getting in trouble for taking pics..oops...well, were only 19..tee hee...
Favorite Broadway by far ...Les Misérables
I have not seen The Color Purple but I think that is the one the American Idol Fantasia is in =)
The Rockette's
If ya can eat a bite or 2..
Bellizzi's..pizza place
202 West 36th Street (close to Empire State Building and Madison Square Garden)
hint: a pie in NY is a whole pizza...a pizza is a slice..you probably already knew that..anyway, white pizza the best!
Also, Staten Island is doing something special this month in regards to culture. They typically will have something free and discounts.
here are a couple of websites I give my friends to use when they go to NYC...they have great info and some if you mention the ad will give you a discount!
newyork.citysearch.com or nycvisit.com
Maybe I should just go too...=)
Have a great time!
But HIP HIP HOORAY on the 42 lb weight loss. I don't care if it was pre-op or post op, it's a milestone worthy of celebration!!
Girl, I'm extremely proud of you!!! Looking forward to seeing you very soon.
Suz and I want to get started on reunion plans very soon so we'll be picking your brain on that.
Hugs and kisses from down the road!
So proud of you for what you've accomplished - one day at a time sweet Jesus.
Hey...if you get a chance - go by Random House - I'd love to see what my employer looks like!!
More books coming your way soon,
Stuart
I've never left the airport in NY but I'd love to go eat at Monks Cafe.
Miss you.
TERRI, you speak the truth. Thanks for looking out for me! I get the feeling that with DONNA, tennis is like a drug and could possibly turn the All American blogger into an entirely different person... HELP!
TCS, I cannot defend my actions... You deserve better than this! I have planned in my head to get your way for several weeks now, so shame on me! Looking forward to an opportunity to make it up to you, dear friend! I miss you!
JETTY BETTY! I told LL we were her fan club! Ha! Can't wait to meet her! Wish you could jet on over for the visit as well...
Totally not surprising BEANER'S suggestion would be on Broadway! :-) As much as I will love it... there will be something missing if you are not on the stage!
Hmmmmmm.... sounds like much of SUSAN'S NY tips came from a few mistakes! Thanks for the tips! I'll look forward to making totally different mistakes than yours! (And sure do appreciate your concern for my weighty matter... You've been an encouragement to me!)
SHELLIE, I was hoping you'd chime in! Girl, I'd love to see your photo albums! Great stuff, no doubt! You would be a fabulous tour guide! Thanks so much for the super info, sweet girl!
JULES... Reunion time again? Holy Moly, we're gettin' old! But how fun will it be to see our classmates! I'm willing to host a pre or post reunion get-together for whoever's available... We must chat!
STUART... There must be countless Irish 'Stuarts' but you are my one and only! May God bless you a hundred times over for the prayers you've said for me and for your exemplary friendship! But man, are you sure you want *me* to pop in on your boss? :-) Lordy, you might be out of work before the week's out!
Yes, SARAH, I can eat like a 'normal' person now (poultry, cheese, vegetables, fruits... food, glorious food!). But the good doc has placed restrictions on all *real* foods... not necessarily because they would irritate the band, moreso due to the many foods that won't aid me in losing weight (foods high in carbs, empty calories, etc.). Thanks for asking, doll. We are both on journeys of surrender, huh...
TIM! Me too! The only time I've been to NY was the layover at JFK on my way to and from Portugal! And there's definitely a NY flavor in the airport! So, I'm really looking forward to seeing the city. Even Greg (Mr. All Tennis, All The Time) is excited about seeing the city! I've had to remind him a few times that "that tennis thing" is why we're going! I miss you too, Timmy Ty... meu amigo!
Congrats on the weight loss. I continue with my journey as well. Thus far, I'm down about 28 pounds. Hooray! It's all about learning to be disciplined and eat healthy, isn't it? I agree with Shellie. It sounds like you have a really good doctor! Can you believe I actually eat my vegetables first now?! Whodda thunk it?!
Love you, sister!
Have a GREAT time with Greg. Wish we could join you.
